If you want to create botanical art either for yourself or as part of an educational program but are unsure of how to start, then the line drawings and color information in Colorful Leaves is for you.
Getting started requires an underlying image. Colorful Leaves combines color inspiration from nature with a selection of reproducible and/or transferrable preliminary line drawings. There is also information on how to develop scientifically accurate line drawings from materials found in your own neighborhood, a practice section with step-by-step illustrations matching colors found in nature to colors available in art materials, and a listing of all the colors/materials that were used to create the examples.
Using the Images in Colorful Leaves
In addition to personal use Colorful Leaves can serve as a tool for introducing botanical art and illustration into a classroom setting or educational outreach program. There are several different methods for working with the line images
1. Work can be done directly on the pages of the book (Exact Vellum Bristol) using crayons, colored pencils, and graphite pencils. For watercolors I recommend transferring the image to watercolor paper and to bleedproof paper for markers.
2. The images can be copied on a copy machine and coloring can be done on the copies. Permission is given for making copies of these line drawings for personal use.
3. Images can be transferred to suitable art paper on which the coloring is then done. This method preserves the original drawings, and images can be repeatedly transferred for experimenting with different papers and various techniques including colored pencils, watercolors, crayons, graphite pencils, markers, pen and ink.

I ordered a copy of Colorful Leaves to preview for future inclusion in both adult and youth classes. One of the things I appreciate about this book is the way the author and illustrator Gail Selfridge presents the content. With examples and ideas for different skill levels, she creates a safe place to draw, practice shading, and play with color. Her colored illustrations provide the variation and detail that reminds us to stop, look, and then observe. I was glad to see many common species included that students in our area would recognize, which makes it more interesting to those who want to learn more from the botany aspect and more fun to work with trees we consider “old friends.” Another plus is how leaves are shown in different aspects, with attention to connection points and leaf margin detail.
I teach adults privately and at our local botanical garden (drawing, watercolor pencil, watercolor, and nature journaling), and have used some of the techniques the author describes. I’m also a visiting artist for summer camps and have created and facilitated day camps for elementary ages that combine art and nature. I appreciate the way she presents relevant chunks of information and illustrations for practice. The line drawings allow students a safe platform to practice shading and mixing color without struggling to draw a complex leaf or branch. At the same time, the author leaves space for new artists to complete a leaf by adding veins. This encourages better observation and attention to shapes, which helps students become more successful. In my experience, even a small success creates confidence and a willingness to stretch, grow, and devote time to practice, which in turn leads to bigger achievements.
The simplicity and accessibility of the basic tools the author presents are a good reason to include them in any program or curriculum about art and nature, for many different age levels. Whether or not a student wants to use them to become a better artist, they are valuable as learning tools to become a better botanist and nature observer. Leaf rubbing can translate to bark and stone rubbings, and the detail gained with this exercise helps us understand function and relationships. Learning about drawing materials and transfer techniques are art basics. The book includes line drawings, common and scientific names of the subjects, and color notes. The line drawings can be reproduced or used from the book; they are printed on Exact Vellum Bristol, a smooth but lightly textured finish on a heavyweight paper. The only improvement I would suggest is a short index in the back for quick reference. I highly recommend this book!
A collection of masterful line drawings of leaves on twigs, some fruit, and stand alone leaves of North American ginkgo, sycamore, cottonwood, redbud, smooth sumac, sugar maple, red maple, etc. The author has wonderous details about how to transfer images, uses of the images, types of papers to use, how to work from the lightest to the darkest hues, how the leaf rubbing process works, and so much more. Scientific names of all shrubs and trees illustrated are included so students can begin to learn about the science of botany. Great book for learning about leaf shapes and edges. Essential book for art teachers, scientists, merit badge counselors that want to I.D. plants for boy scouting, artists, home schooling, and Nebraska Arbor Day enthusiasts.
I'll summarize As a 6th grade teacher at a Title 1 school, I am always looking for different materials and hands-on activities to incorporate into my teaching and lesson plans. I teach Math this year, and was able to use Ms. Selfridge's book today not only as a hands-on art lesson, but also a discussion on how leaves are related to Math. My students decided that leaves are (and I'm re-stating what they said!) Math because they have symmetry, leaves have definite shapes, we can count their veins and how many "edges and ridges" they have, how long leaves can be, how many leaves can be found on stems and trees, etc. We began studying the shapes found in the book, and they had a great time comparing the leaves. We then paused, I handed each student an actual leaf from our campus and paper, gave them crayons, and showed them how to make a leaf rubbing, and turned them loose. All of a sudden, they weren't just interested, they were excited! They went back to the book and were excited to again compare the details of what they saw on their paper with Ms. Selfridge's detailed drawings. The next lesson including this book will include students also drawing/coloring leaves, modeled after leaves they see, with guidance from Ms. Selfridge's book. I overheard discussions such as how "This leaf is different from this drawing because___", or "Wait! This leaf looks like this drawing because ____" I am really enjoying this book and look forward to additional lessons/comparisons from this book!
